PRS X-axis Energy Chain (Echain) Installation
This document describes the installation of the energy chain (Echain) on the X-axis of ShopBot PRS models. The X-axis Echain is shipped with PRS models with X-axis lengths of 120 and 144in (3658mm). It is available as an option for X-axis lengths 96in and shorter.
Applies to PRS models only, not PRT models with extruded aluminum table sides.
Components
| The X-upper Echain bracket (002156) carries the Echain. It mounts to the back of the gantry on the end plate. The end plate on earlier PRS models may not have mounting holes present See drawings at the end of this document for locations to drill holes if needed. |
| The Echain comes in a specific length to match the X axis of the ShopBot for which it was ordered. The Echain is center-mounted and anchored at a point near the center of the tool and travels with the X-gantry. |
| Echain Trough helps guide the Echain down the length of the tool and also acts as an anchor point for the lower end of the Echain. The Echain trough is 64” (1625mm) or 74” (1879mm) depending on the length and configuration of the ShopBot. |
| Echain Trough Bracket (002155) mounts to the underside of the table side extrusion and rests on the side of the table leg. The trough bracket provides support for the trough and for the Echain. |
| 5/16-18 Ball & Spring Pivot Insert (000728). Two of these specialized pieces of mounting hardware will be used to mount the Echain trough brackets to the underside of the table extrusion. They slip into the slot of the table extrusion and rotate into position before being tightened.
Other miscellaneous hardware used to mount these parts will be called out when needed. |

Mounting the PRS X-axis Echain
We assume that the X-axis Echain will always be installed on the back side of the ShopBot. When installed, the Echain carries the cables from the gantry to approximately the center of the ShopBot. The trough supports the Echain as it travels along the X axis. Thspan the distance between the table legs farthest from the X zero position.

Step 1: Installing the Trough Bracket
These instructions describe mounting a single trough bracket. Use the following items:
- (1) Echain trough bracket (002155)
- (2) Button Head screws 5/16-18x3/4
- (2) Lock Washer 5/16
- (2) Ball & spring pivot insert (000728)
Insert the ball & spring pivot on the bottom of the table side inline with the center of the table leg. Due to the hole spacing of the trough bracket., it is necessary to position the ball & spring pivot inserts so that the holes are turned toward each other Mount the Echain trough bracket loosely with the button head screws and washers.
| |
Mount the rest of the trough brackets. Usually the middle table leg as well as the farthest leg from the X zero position are used. If you are installing the X-axis Echain on a PRS96, install the Splice Plate as described in Step 2 to attach the other trough bracket. Otherwise, go to Step 3 Installing the Trough.
Step 2: Installing the Splice Plate (only on PRS96 models)
If you are installing your Echain kit on any model other than a PRS96, skip this step and go to Step 3. Because the distance between the table legs on the PRS96 model is greater than that on longer models, a center mounting position must be created with the splice plate PRS (002035).
- (1) Splice Plate PRS (002035)
- (4) Button Head screws 5/16-18x3/4
- (4) Lock Washer 5/16
- (4) Ball & spring pivot insert (000728)
Loosely attach the splice plate in the lower two T-slots of the inside face of the table side extrusion. in the middle of the back table side. When mounted correctly, half of the splice plate will be suspended below the bottom edge of the table side. Tighten fully only after the adjustment at the end of Step 4. Loosely mount the trough bracket from the back side of the tool as instructed in Step 1. The back edge of the trough bracket should rest against the splice plate just as it would normally rest against a leg. Leave the 5/16 button head screws loose until after the adjustment at the end of Step 4.
| Neither the holes in the back edge of the trough bracket nor the holes in the lower portion of the splice plate are intended to align. Centering the bracket to the splice plate my not be possible depending on the placement of the table cross supports.. | |
Step 3: Installing the Trough
- (1) Echain trough (64 or 74)
- (2) Flat Head screws ¼-20x3/4
- (2) Lock Washer ¼
- (2) Flat Washer ¼
- (2) ¼ Nylock nut
| Position the Echain trough so that the holes closest to the edges are over the inside holes in the trough brackets. Secure the trough to the bracket using the 1/4” flat head screws, flat washers, lock washers, and nylock nuts.. | |
| Repeat on the outside of holes of the Echain bracket. | |
| For models that need extended lengths of trough, use the second set of holes in the Echain bracket to abut the trough sets together | |
Step 4: Installing the X-upper Echain Bracket
- (1) Echain X-upper Echain Bracket (002156)
- (2) Button Head screws ¼-20x3/4
- (2) Lock Washer ¼
Mount the X-upper Echain bracket to the ¼-20 holes located in the side of the endplate. Use the button head and lock washer to secure the X-upper Echain bracket to the endplate.
Early models may not have ¼-20 holes in the endplates. Slightly larger holes may be drilled in this instance. Use ¼-20 nuts to secure the X-upper Echain bracket if this method is used. (See End Plate drawing at the end of document)
Step 4: Installing the Echain
- (1) Echain
- (4) Flat Head screws 10-32x3/4
- (4) Flat Washer #10
- (4) Lock Washer #10
- (4) 10-32 Nut
Attach the Echain to the tab that extends out from the X-upper Echain bracket. Use the flat head 10-32 screws, flat washer, lock washer and nut. |
|
On the other end of the Echain attach the Echain to the holes located 3 ½” (64mm) from the end of the trough and closest to the middle of the machine.
| Use the flat head 10-32 screws, flat washer, lock washer and nuts to attach the lower portion of the Echain to the trough. | |
After the Echain is installed, move the X-axis back and forth the full extent of travel. The Echain should at no time feel as thought it is binding or under tension. If necessary, loosen the 5/16-18 button heads in the trough bracket and adjust the trough slightly in needed direction along the table side, then tighten the 5/16 button heads down completely.
End Plate Drawing
Use this drawing to drill 2 holes to mount the X-upper Echain Bracket (002156) if they are not predrilled in the end plates. It is necessary to drill holes in only the back end plate where the Echain will be mounted.

Opening the Echain

With a flat head screw driver insert the tip into either side of the hinged access bar. Turn the screw driver approximately ¼ turn clockwise and then ¼ counterclockwise or until the sides of the access bars release. Open the access bars to run all wiring that is common to the machine.
| Use wire ties to secure the cables to the strain relief tabs on the ends of the Echain to help with the strain relief of the cables. Do not use wire ties inside the Echain due to the fact that they may bind during movement of the machine. | |
